squats are a complete total body exercise. more than 500 muscles get involved when you squat. some people think that squatting induces injury. they are right. but only when you squat without proper form. this is why it is crucial to master the form with body-weight squats in the first place. squats are a compound movement that rises testosterone levels which enhance muscle growth. i wish i could see more women under that squat rack! if you want firm and round glutes, no exercise will do the job as good as the squats. and btw: no squatting under the smith machine, please! that's ridiculous and the smith-machine squats have nothing to do with regular barbell squats. under the smith machine you can't work those muscles called stabilizers that are very important for the overall strength and fat burning. try squatting the same weight on the smith or with free weight... then you'll notice the difference yourself. plus, the smith-machine squats spoil the natural movement of the body and they put too much stress on the joints, on the patellar ligament and the anterior cruciate ligament.
weight-lifting plateaus are very common in squatting and sometimes people complain about lower back pain. that's why it's important to add weight progressively every week. leave your ego at home and remember... form over weight!
