FATS don't make you FAT

there are many people out there who still think that fats make you fat. this is so untrue! everything eaten in excess will make you fat... it's the caloric surplus that makes you fat, not the fats by themselves.
fats are used by our body as energy. if you eliminate them, you'll feel sluggish during the day. but most importantly, fats are essential for brain function, joint function, hormonal production and other cellular activities. for example, vitamin A, D, E and K are fat soluble vitamins... this means that if you don't eat fats, your body won't absorb these vitamins. fats are very important for our body.. let's put it like this... our body can survive without carbs, but it cannot survive without fats. also colon, breast, and prostate cancers have all been correlated with low intakes of essential fatty acids. kids may not grow as they should if they don't consume enough of the good fats because fats are vital to the membrane that surrounds every cell in your body. they are also essential for the nervous system.

there are 3 types of fats... and we need all of them:
-saturated fats (bad fats):
found mostly in animals, eggs, chicken, steak, and pork chops.
these fats are not really bad... they become bad fats when you heat them. saturated fats by themselves don't promote cholesterol.. it's the sugar-saturated fat combination that rises the triglycerides. some saturated fats are needed for hormonal
production so do not cut these fats out of your diet completely.

-polyunsaturated fats (good fats): found in vegetable oils, such as corn, cottonseed, safflower, soybean and sunflower oil. foods like walnuts, peanuts, pumpkin & sesame seeds, fish like salmon, sardines, mackerel, herring, trout, tuna... these are high in omega-3 fatty acids which cannot be produced by the body and are ESSENTIAL for life. however, the oils may not be the healthiest choice since they are processed. i would prefer you go with natural food sources.

-monounsaturated fats or omega-9 fatty acids (good fats):
help to keep cholesterol and blood pressure down. you can find them in sunflower oil, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, pecans, almonds, pistachios, cashews, olives, avocado, peanuts, corn, rice bran, soy, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, flaxseeds, Atlantic fish like halibut, cheeses like Parmesan, Monteey jack, Roquefort..
these are good fats that help with muscle recovery. just make sure they don't come from processed sources.
