spring's here but people are already thinking summer -> bikini -> diet! i will never understand why (maybe this is my limit, i don't know.. you tell me), when people want to lose wight, they start running. that simply doesn't make sense to me. first of all, because running is not for everyone. you can risk an injury.. in fact one of the most common injuries among newbies is the knee sprain. when you haven't run for a long while or maybe for years, you can't just start like you are a marathoner. your knees must be able to sustain your body weight jumping up and down for an hour or so.
if your goal is fat loss or muscle gain, running is the last thing you should do. as you can see from the picture below, prolonged cardio burns the muscle tissue and the result is skinny, not fit.
another very important thing to consider is the metabolism slow down. our body is always looking for homeostasis and that's why it adapts to the training. that happens especially with cardio. the more efficient your body becomes at running (or any type of cardio), the fewer calories you will burn.
and did you considered cortisol? there are people who do all types of training, cardio every day for hours.. but still, they can't drop a pound. strange, ha? nope, not at all. the answer to their problem is cortisol. when cortisol levels are high, the body does the exact opposite... it stores fat and burns muscle tissue. cortisol also lowers the body's ability to process carbs and insulin. as a result you get cravings and your body keeps storing carbs as fat.
also remember that no workout will ever get you in shape, unless you have your nutrition under control. nutrition is 70% of the final result.
proper nutrition + weight lifting + little and controlled cardio (sometimes not necessary if you have little fat to lose) = fat loss
