TIPS TO TRACK YOUR PROGRESS

for how many of you today or yesterday was a weigh-in day? how many of you got disappointed by the number on the scale.. it's not moving... or it's actually going up... but you are doing you best, right?! so what's wrong? why nothing works?

the scale is the worst tool to measure you progress! the number on the display, doesn't tell the whole story...
the time of the day can affect your weight. so it's better that you weigh yourself first thing in the morning, naked and on an empty stomach. food can bloat you not only during the day, but can alter your weight during specific times of the month... women know that very well... that's why, if you are a woman, i always recommend weighting yourself once a month and always on the same day of your period. and did you know that men have a period too? not a visible one, but they are still undergo hormonal changes.
fluctuations on the scale represent a combination of fat, muscle tissue and water. if you lost or gained, it could be fat, muscle or water. and no, the BIA scales are not precise at all.
so, don't get discouraged and try other ways of tracking your progress:

-measurements. all you need is a tape measure and a buddy. on the web you can find more precise tips on how to take the measurements. there are many different ways to do it (like arm up or down etc)... but the important thing is that you do it always in the same way and at the very same spots.

-take a pic every week. take it in the same place, with the same light and in the same pose. light is VERY important and it can really make a big difference. put the weekly pix side by side and see if you can notice any progress. be objective!

-use a piece of clothing. you know, sometimes the scale goes up, but the clothes fit loose. this is the best news you can get... it means you lost fat and gained muscle. but sometimes the clothes fit tight, and the scale moved up... well, this doesn't necessarily mean you gained fat.. it can mean that you gained muscle! also if your clothes fit loose, still doesn't mean you lost fat... this is why the best way to track your progress is to

-get your BF measured by a personal trainer. make sure you always get it measured by the very same person! this is very important. when we measure the BF on a client, we use our hands and fingers to find the right spot... and as you know, our hands are all different.. some are bigger, some smaller, some have longer fingers and so on. this can affect the final BF percentage so you can't compare it to the previous measurement.
